“ Constellations “
16 (Fri) September - 6 (Sun) November, 2022
The moon followed me no matter how far I ran
The stars formed lines and shapes as the seasons go
Feeling the new time and air
Here and now together
Gallery 38 is pleased to present Eiji Uematsu: Constellations, an exhibition of Uematsu's works dating from the 1980's to today, constituting a wide range of works from different periods of his career.
Over the course of his five-decade career, Uematsu has consistently explored his fascination with soil alongside his pure dialogue with nature. The characteristics of each material, such as the life-like movement of the mud and the cracks and distortions that appear on the surface of the clay, highlight traces of earth and fire from the kiln. The works reveal Uematsu's refusal to be bound by existing methodologies or his own consciousness; rather, he has unvaryingly focused on pursuing the emotions he feels from soil and nature. Through the forms he creates, Uematsu shows us irreplaceable landscapes sculpted by the passage of time that we may have overlooked in nature. He hopes his viewers will notice the textures of the earth and not his personal expressions. His works provide an opportunity to discover the precious time and space hidden in the ordinary landscapes we see everyday. We hope that this exhibition will present the wider public with an opportunity to experience his meditative works, in which the viewer’s own responses toward art and nature can intermingle with Uematsu's creativity, whose attitude towards these earth-based materials has not changed for nearly 50 years.
