From the Ancient to the Present Times IV
March 15(Fri) - April 14(Sun), 2024
This exhibition presents ancient artefacts and contemporary artworks in the same space to explore their allure and unchanging beauty.
As contemporary art reflects the situations and issues of modern society, ancient artefacts may also reflect the situations, values, and beliefs of the time they were created. Sometimes for ceremonial purposes, sometimes for practical use, these ancient artefacts using local materials not only give us a glimpse of the scenes of their time but also of the “beauty” of their time.
The fact that similar motifs and colours are used in ancient artefacts and contemporary artworks reminds us that there is an unchanging beauty in this world. This unchanging beauty exists in front of us with a new value generated with time. The mysterious nature of the ancient world allows us to ask simple questions about the artefacts, and to find different stories by engaging with them. On the other hand, works created in the modern age allow us to know about the intentions and background of the artists as they live in the present day helping us to interpret and understand their works in more depth.
The relationship between “unchanging beauty” and “time” emerges interestingly when we see works from different periods ranging from B.C. to the present day. Just as our perspective on ancient artefacts has changed over time due to the loss of information, contemporary art will also go through time. We hope this exhibition will provide an opportunity to think about how contemporary art, which is created each day in our complex modern society, will exist in the future after they go through “time”.
