From the Ancient to the Present Times II
March 9 (wed) - April 17 (sun), 2022
Following on from the same exhibition held in 2021, this exhibition presents ancient and contemporary artworks in the same space to explore their allure and unchanging beauty.
As contemporary art reflects the situations and issues of modern society, ancient artworks may also reflect the situations, values, and beliefs of the time they were created. Ancient artworks were created for various reasons, sometimes for rituals, sometimes for practical use, not only do they reveal the scenes of that time, but they also offer a glimpse of the “beauty” of that time.
The fact that ancient and contemporary works sometimes share common motifs reminds us that there is an unchanging beauty in this world. This unchanging beauty exists in front of us with a new value generated with time. Because the ancient world is shrouded in mystery, we can ask simple questions and be curious about the works and face the works themselves. On the other hand, works created in the modern world differ from ancient works; we can learn about the intentions and background of the artists as they live in the present day which allows us to interpret their works in more depth.
The relationship between “unchanging beauty” and “time” emerges in an interesting way when we see works from different periods that range from B.C. to the present day. Just as our perspective on ancient artworks has changed over time due to the loss of information, contemporary art will also go through time. We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity to think about how contemporary art, which is created each day in our complex modern society, will exist in the future after they go through “time”.
