Akiko Horiuchi
Gallery show:
植松永次 / Eiji Uematsu
April 1 (Thu) - May 22 (Sat), 2021
Gallery 38 is pleased to present a selection of works by Eiji Uematsu, which features Mud Flower (2006) from the exhibition SOIL/FIRE at Koumimachi Kogen Museum of Art.
Since the beginning of his artistic career in the 1970s, Uematsu has produced a wide range of works unrestrained by the existing frameworks and methodologies such as fine art and ceramics. The texture of the clay, the serendipitous cracks, and the distinct colors that highlight traces of fire seem to convey the excitement of the artist, who is impressed by the outcome that emerges from his dialogue with the materials of the earth. Uematsu often says that he would like the viewers to see the texture of the soil and feel the importance of nature rather than his own expression. The shapes Uematsu finds in the soil remind us of the precious scenery and time that we might have overlooked.
We hope that more people will take this opportunity to experience his works to relate to and recall their own nostalgic memories, as well as understand nearly 50 years of Uematsu’s unchanged and sincere attitude towards working with the soil.
